Behind The Lens

Location

This foto was captured after a dinner at the "27 Pub & Grill", Wiscasset, Maine. Shown are the Owner/Cook/Guitarist/Singer Mark Buscanera and a close friend.

Time

This foto was captured October 1st, 2014 at 10:10pm. It was shot indoors and had my camera in the car as my friend and I had been out shooting earlier in the day.

Lighting

The 27 Pub and Grill is fairly low lit, but I couldnt miss the moment as Mark had just brought out his guitar and began singing. So i collected my camera from the car and just began shooting without the flash, just as a lighting experiment, plus i didnt really want to ruin the moment with the flash going off all the time.

Equipment

I had my trusty old Nikon D70s, with a Tamron 70-300mm 572D already mounted. No time for a tripod and decided to forgo the built-in flash and just tried to stay inobtrusive as to not ruin my friends' evening and hid in the corner.

Inspiration

I had no idea Mark the owner was such a talented performer and my friend Laurie seemed so content, really seemed to be really enjoying the evening and the moment. I had no choice but to grab my camera.

Editing

I thought my fotos would be a bit dark, and I couldn't wait to see if had managed to capture some kind of low lighting effects. The fotos themselves were really dark. I imported them into Lightroom 5.6 and pulled the shadows out and even though the fotos were pretty fuzzy and the colors were way off I got lucky with about 3 or 4 shots. Shots which seemed to convey a little story. I liked the bokeh effect of the bar behind the subjects and the funny reds and greens. The subjects seemed to transcend poor lighting. The only bit left i spent the most time on really was experimenting and searching for a way to strike some kind of balance and smoothness that wouldn't interfere to much with the story in the foto itself.

In my camera bag

I am an amatuer photograher on a low budget so I don't really have alot of cameras and lenses. But, I do have a Nikon D70s and 3 lenses. A recently acquired Tokina 100mm AT-X Pro Prime/fixed lens, a Tamron 28-80mm 177D, and a Tamron 70-300mm 572D. The Tokina is for my macro stuff, the 28-80mm for group shots, and the 70-300mm for just about anything, I just like its versatility.

Feedback

Well, it sure would have been nice to bring the tripod and collapsible reflector. Then try and get myself invovled with trying to reposition the subjects, but then again with todays technologies and softwares it was more fun to take a gamble and just go with the flow of the evening. The foto itself breaks a few rules for sure but the moment itself seemed more important. Thanx for ur time and have fun out there.....!
