Behind The Lens

Location

This is a photo of the PolyTech University in Lakeland Florida. This is one of my favorite architectural structures to photograph..You can spend a whole day framing up all the angles and geometric shapes that this building creates. And it looks different at different times of the day depending on what angle the sun is striking the windows and metal beams.

Time

After spending the afternoon walking around the university and taking dozens of photos, my husband and I decided to go have an early dinner and return at sunset to get some more shots..While we ate it began to rain, but fortunately stopped before sunset. When we returned to the PolyTech, we were in awe. As the sun was setting, the sky turned into this ball of firery orange with bits of yellow and purple peeking through. The sunset as a backdrop to this amazing structure was any photographer's dream. It definitely was a matter of being in the right place at the right time.

Lighting

The lighting was all about the sunset that night coupled with the lights from inside the PolyTech.

Equipment

I photographed this image with my Canon 7D with my Tamron 24-70 Sp lens. I had my camera on my tripod and set the aperture to F22. I am not sure what the shutter speed was., but iit was very slow because my ISO was set at 100

Inspiration

After already taking many photos, I chose this veiw point, because I liked how the lights along the path and the walll led your eyes into the photo leading you right to the doors in the middle of the image. I also loved the way the sky was looking right above the center of the image and how the yellow windows looked against the backdrop of the orange sky.

Editing

I did some post processing in Adobe Photoshop CS6 and it's NiK plug in Viveza. In camera raw, I adjusted the color balance, contrast, clarity, blacks and whites, and boosted the lumonosity. In viveza I boosted the structure, too.

In my camera bag

What's in my bag depends on what I'm shooting. On this shoot I brought my 7D, 24-70 SP Tamron lens, My 70-200 Canon L lens, my tripod, cable release, my Canon 600 EX-XRT flash, a polarlzer fllter and a neutral density filter. I always have a reflector with me, too, just in case I need one to bounce light or diffuse it.

Feedback

If you want to shoot an image like this a definite is a tripod...because a smaller aperture, f 16 or smaller will give you a greater depth of field and sharper focus throughout. You will not be able to handhold your camera unless you raise your ISO really high and I wanted to reduce the noise as much as possible so I shot at an ISO of 100. Next, I used a cable release too, to reduce camera shake. I manually focused so I could have more control over the focus. Last, I used a wide angle lens.
