Location
This photo was taken in Provo Utah under an I-15 overpass. Though it was a freezing late night shoot, it was absolutely worth it.Time
This was a late and long shoot. I remember waiting for many long exposures on a very cold night well past midnight and into the next morning before sunrise.Lighting
My main goal was to be able to capture long streaking lights from passing cars to provide a dramatic and bold look to the contrasting night sky.Equipment
Nikon 800D with, 50mm f/1.8 lens, and a tripod.Inspiration
I have always loved long exposure shooting and how it gives a new perspective to the light we see every day. To see the world around me in new ways gets me out and shooting.Editing
Overall there was minimal post processing. Tweaks were made to make the image pop a little more but I was quite pleased with the shot turned out right from the camera. The main change was getting rid of the small amount of red from the car tail lights as I preferred the look of the blue/white light streaks. This gave the image a cooler temperature and bolder look.In my camera bag
Usually it’s just me and my Nikon D800, Nikkor f/1.8 G, and my iPhone. Keeping things simple forces me to think outside the box at times when another lens may suit a shot better. It definitely pushes me to get creative.Feedback
I think what really helps this shot shine is the composition. The bright lights stretching across the image pulls your attention but is then complimented by a pleasing and contrasting background. Finding a subject and composition that can be accentuated by long exposure lights goes a long way for shots like this.
