Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken close to Cheesering near Mininions on Bodmin Moor, Cornwall way back in 2013.

Time

This has been a personal favorite of mine for a long time but it has never had the recognition. I had spent the day on the moor with my partner and our cameras trying to capture the essence of its barren beauty. The weather was overcast with some sunshine, it was July and very humid. We had come to the end of our adventure on the moor and were heading back to our car when I captured this image.

Lighting

The original image looked fantastic on the display screen of the camera but I was less impressed when I viewed it at home on a larger screen and the lighting from the sun thanks to the break in the clouds was lost. I simply coverted the image to black & white and the tones I was looking for in the photo rectified what I was expecting and gave the image the atmosphere of the moorland that day.

Equipment

Just my trusty Sony a35k Camera with a 75-300 telephoto lens, no other equipment for this unexpected shot.

Inspiration

This moment was captured just at that right time. My partner was taking a similar shot but from a different angle but 30 meters away. I could see by the face that it wasn't right and caught my attention because I was. Quickly I changed my lens to the telephoto lens to get in closer nervous I was going to miss it. At that moment just as the ram reached to take a bite of the leaves the suns rays highlighted my subject.

Editing

I used Adobe Lightroom to make some minor adjustments. I converted the image into black & white and added some highlight to the breaks in the cloud to help show the atmosphere I experienced that day, which seen with the naked I can sometimes become lost through the camera.

In my camera bag

Apart from my Sony a35, I have the odd filter lens and a tripod, I tend to use my eyes to look for the perfect composition.

Feedback

The moors can be unpredictable and weather can change dramatically so I advise looking at the weather forecast before venturing out. Don't take too much equipment because walking long distances over rugged uneven terrain can be strenuous. In this instance converting images later into black & white can give a different feel to and image, taking in black & white restricts your options later on in post-processing, so I recommend taking photos in colour first.
