Location
I took this shot in the Botanical Gardens of the Huntington Library in San Marino, California. It has a wonderful collection of rare and exotic plants on 120 acres. It is quite a spectacular place for photo ops!Time
This shot was taken on a January afternoon in warm California.Lighting
It was a sunny day which makes it difficult to get a good flower capture but I didn't think the lighting was overly bright on this particular flower.Equipment
I used my Canon Rebel t3i with my 17-55mm lens, hand held.Inspiration
The Gardens are absolutely gorgeous! I was drawn to this particular flower because I had never seen one like it before. The petals are unusually thick and the color is a very pleasing pastel. I wanted to capture the beauty of this very unique bloom!Editing
I use picasa which is fairly simplistic, comparatively speaking. I believe I used the HDR feature but mostly I wanted to soften this up and so I used a blur. I feel the blur around the edges also helped the flower pop more, giving it a nice combination of strength and softness. In my camera bag
So that I don't have to keep switching lenses, I now carry 2 Canon Rebel bodies - a t3i and a t5i. My 3 lenses consist of a 17-55mm, a 70-300mm zoom, and a macro EF 100mm 1:2.8.Feedback
Although I certainly don't use anything complicated, I constantly try to play around with editing. I think the pleasing aspect of this particular flower shot is from post-processing. Try to experiment with different features to see how it changes the image to hopefully make it come alive.
