Mama’s nursing her twins while a male elephant is (literally) sniffing around to see if she’s ready for him to be her baby daddy. I think she’s saying “not around the children” or should be. I don’t know if a female will get pregnant while her babies are nursing and they nurse for 3+ years. Good a reason as any for her to say “I’ve got a headache”.
Yikes! Two babies nursing for 3 years and pregnant for 2 years? I don’t think so!
We have a lot to learn from elephants. They’re matriarchal. That means the females run the herds. There will be one Big Mama and rankings going down. When the males reach juvenile age, they start being rambunctious and trouble. And horny. For the peace of the herd, and to maintain genetic purity, the boys are kicked out to fend for themselves. When they’re in musth (testosterone raging), they’ll make booty calls to herds. Sometimes they’re accepted, sometimes they’re not.
