The sun was just about to come over the ridge as the riders passed by us. This isn't a black and white image. It's just the way it came out - sun hadn't risen, it was still dark except for the glow in the sky awaiting the sun.

In silence we ride, wind and hoofbeats our music. Alone and together with our brothers, alone with our thoughts we let them wander, for we have faith in the friend and companion under us. Trusting in his ancestors wisdom coursing through him to guide us safely through this journey and the wonders that lie before us.

Sunrise - I waited until the sun was just starting to think about coming over the ridge where the horses and riders were making their leisurely way across.Lighting
The lighting was worth waiting for. I stood there until just before the sun rose above the horizon of the ridge. The horses and riders appeared as silhouettes against the sun. The result was a silhouette. I didn't convert to black and white. This was exactly the way it appeared. Very little processing required.Equipment
Canon 5D Mk III, EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM Telephoto Zoom, no tripodInspiration
The light coming over the ridge was going to be perfect as the horses and their riders rode across the ridge. All I had to do was wait until the silhouettes were perfect. Then I started snapping regularly. This one was perfect because of the lead rider lifting the reins. AND all of the horses showed 4 legs. That's important in shooting animals.Editing
Very little. Some sharpening and darkening to make the silhouettes more obvious. In my camera bag
For this particular outing, I had 2 camera bodies: Canon 5D Mark III with EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM Telephoto Zoom, and Canon 60D with Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS USM AF Lens, both with Nikon circular polarizers. Dust blower because there's a lot of that there! Also my Canon G15 point and shoot for emergency shots. But if I'm going out in the car and don't know what I'll run into to shoot, I'll have my whole set of gear - all lenses, all cameras, teleconverter, cleaning materials, 2 tripods (Manfrottos), black cloth to cover my camera viewscreen in the bright sun, mounts, manuals, guides, lots of SD and CF cards, and maybe a small laptop.Feedback
Patience. Wait for the light.
