Location
This shot was taken while flying over San Diego Bay.Time
This was in the afternoon at about 3:47 on Jan 24Lighting
This was shot in winter at least by the calendar so at the time; 3:45 in San Diego we were starting to head towards golden hour. The light was lower to the west and really helped to highlight the subjects rather well.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D7100 and a kit 18-105 nikon lens. Nothing special, just a rather sharp mid-range lens that has performed well in the past for air-to-air sessions.Inspiration
I was asked to get a shot of this 5-ship formation as they passed over the USS Midway Museum. This shot was completely unplanned and during the three laps around San Diego Bay we got one shot over the Midway, another shot over the Stars and Strips; the 1992 America's Cup racing yacht sailed by Dennis Conner, and this bonus shot with one of the tour boats that runs on the Bay. I saw this shot coming into view and had to go for it!Editing
This was processed in both On1 and Lightroom. I sharpened and added some dynamic contrast to add some punch. A small amount of cropping to help center the subject, but this was about 70% of original frame. In my camera bag
My equipment varies based on what I intend to shot, D7100 or 7200 with wide, mid, or tele or all three when I'm going with the flow.Feedback
If you ever get the change to do an air-to-air session, take a mid range lens so that you can handle a wide shot if your in close formation or zoom a little to pull in something a little further out. Stay out of the wind stream as it will buffet your camera and make getting a sharp shot really difficult.
