Behind The Lens

Location

This particular photo was shot over San Diego Bay just after crossing over the Coronado Bridge. I was asked to do a photo shoot while 'shadowing' a 5-ship formation as they flew over the USS Midway Museum. We flew three complete laps around the SD Bay and in addition to getting the desired subject shot, we managed to fly over some other very interesting subjects on the water. They're all in my images here on ViewBug so take a look when you get the chance... This particular image just happened to capture not only the 5-ship San Diego Salute - Formation Team, but the Stars & Stripes from the America's Cup fame... What a day on the bay and in the air!

Time

This was shot around 3:45 late afternoon in January 2015.

Lighting

The light was starting into the phase just prior to sunset, low in the sky, but still strong enough to produce some very vivid colors.

Equipment

This shot was hand-held using a Nikon D7100 and a Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED lens

Inspiration

Anybody that knows me and my photos knows that I love to shoot Airplanes, Car Shows, Zoos, and Period events. So when some Formation Flying friends asked me to do a photo shoot for a magazine Ad that involved some formation flying, lets just say 'they didn't have to ask twice'.

Editing

This was processed in LR to crop etc, and I used the Effects tool in Perfect Photo Suite - 8 to introduce some mild Sharpening and Glow settings with just a little Dynamic contrast.

In my camera bag

I've been using a D7100 and recently added a D7200 for my bodies. For lenses I use either a Tokina 12-24mm f/4.0, Nikkor 50mm f/1.4, Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6, Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 VR-1 and Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.0-5.6. I'll generally take a mix of lenses that fits each type of shooting event/session.

Feedback

When I shoot Air-to-Air (A2A) I try to use my mid range zoom (18-105 on DX) that favors the wide end of the focal range. This gives me a fairly broad range of shot coverage and it's small a light and doesn't stick out in the wind to cause vibration issues in the air. For this shot and others in this session shooting propeller Airplanes I wanted to shoot with a slow enough shutter speed to get some prop blur without risking poor focus on the subjects. This was hand held in an open canopy Grumman Tiger so the wind and somewhat bumpy ride called for the use of VR and this little kit lens is one of by better performing VR lenses. Setting on this image was 80mm @ f/8.0 1/320sec and ISO 200. I suspect that most if not all of the other shots during this session where similar except focal length.
