Location
This was taken in northern Oregon at Trillium Lake. It's quite a popular spot and it took a bit of exploring to find the perfect composition without obstructions. In fact, there were a handfull of photographers just out of the frame to the right.Time
We happened to get here about a half hour before the sun set. I was able to get setup and ready then just kept shooting until the light was no longer as good.Lighting
As the day was getting late I was observing the sky and clouds. We were driving along the highway where I had never been before but I knew I could find somewhere to catch the sunset that evening. The sun was getting low and the clouds were starting to catch the light just right.Equipment
I used a Nikon D7200 with the Nikon 17-55mm f2.8 DX lens. I also used a 4 stop ND filter to smooth the water a bit.Inspiration
As we were driving back to Portland after a day of exploring I was observing the sky. Nearing Mount Hood I realized this would be the perfect place to capture the sunset. The timing was just right to give me long enough to scout a location and set up in time for the sunset.Editing
I bracketed multiple shots and used two exposures to blend for the foreground rocks and background. I also used Nik Color Efex Pro 4 to boost the color contrast and did some minor noise reduction. In my camera bag
Along with the D7200 I keep the 17-55mm f2.8, 55-300mm f4.5-5.6, and a 35mm f1.8 with me. I have recently added a MeFoto tripod and Formatt Hightech ND filter kit.Feedback
My advice would be to show up early to get your perfect composition before the sunset begins. The light changes quickly so just keep shooting. And, when you think you've got enough stay an extra 20 minutes. The blue hour was just as amazing that night and I regretted packing up early.
