Lowery Park Zoo's newest addition. I love watching the Orangatans at the zoo. These animals have such personality. This new momma was showing off her baby to all the zoo patrons. I sat and watched them for over an hour..patience is the key to animal photography.

Yeah - I love them - I took few there. The patriarh of the family really does not welcome photography...

Thank you sat and watched them for over an hour. Waited until they moved to a perfect spot and used fill flash off camera

You've captured the pride in the mother and love between these two beautifully. The colors, lighting and texture are perfect! Fantastic!

Location
Photographing animals has always been a favorite subject of mine. This year, our nearby Lowry Park Zoo in Florida, offered a pay one price and come back all year deal. Of course I took advantage and made many trips to the zoo to observe the orangutans with their new babies. After watching this mother and baby for almost an hour I finally got the shot I wanted.Time
This photo was taken in the early evening, I know it was close to 6pm, because they actually asked us to leave the zoo because it was closing. The light was sweet. The sun was starting to set creating a nice soft, warm glow in the Orangutan's enclosure.Lighting
I took this with available light and I patiently waited for my subject to enter a shaded part of the their enclosure so that there would not be any harsh shadows creating dark eyes.Equipment
I took this image with my Canon 5D mark III on a tripod, with my 70-200 zoom lens and a 2x converter attached.Inspiration
The cuteness of the baby orangutans is what inspired me to keep shooting and shooting hoping to get that perfect shot.,Editing
I did minimal post processing on this image. I processed it in Adobe Photoshop Camera raw, boosting blacks and vibrancy slightly, and then adjusting it a little more in levels. In my camera bag
When I am on a zoo photo excursion, I bring my Canon 5D mark III. My lens of choice is my Canon 70-200 L f 2.8 lens with a 2x converter. I always bring my 600 xrt flash, too, because I like to use fill flash to lighten the animals eyes. Lastly, I bring a tripod or a mono-pod.Feedback
My advice to zoo photographers is patience. Watch the animals. Learn their habits. Observe how they interact. And wait for the perfect picture. If you are patient and wait it will happen.
