On location on the shoreline of Moses Lake, Washington State.Time
Early morning right after everyone had breakfast. It is the best light for warm back light from this shoreline side of Moses Lake.Lighting
I used early morning sunlight. It is such a great time to get that extra soft warm glow for back lighting. No flash was used. There is something so warm about morning light. It has a totally different effect then end day sun! It is the perfect kind of light for a happy shot!Equipment
Canon T3i and Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS II lens, all hand held. No tripod was used. I did find that using live view through the back screen helped to get the shot composed and focused like I wanted! Not sure if other people prefer that, especially professional photographers, but I do find it helpful.Inspiration
I've been inspired by photographers like Elena Shumilova, Adrian Murray and Lisa Holloway, to name a few. I love images that bring to life stories of childhood. When I've seen some work of the photographers I listed and the wonderful moments of childhood they have captured, I realize there's a real need for many more moments of innocence like these to be produced. Images that remind us of simple things in life and what's truly important, especially in a world that has so much negative going on. This kind of shoot is actually my favorite, but just beginning at it, so really looking forward to trying more like it in the future.Editing
I usually start processing in light room. For this shot I brought up shadows, adjusted color and increased clarity slightly and applied a vignette. Then moved it to photo shop and softened the background so the little girl and dog would stand out and be the main focus because I like the shallow depth of field look but had to keep both the little girl and the dog in focus to get the full effect I wanted. I am fairly new to both light room and photo shop so if I can edit this, anyone can!In my camera bag
Canon T3i camera, Canon 24-70 f/2.8 lens, Canon 50mm 1.8 lens, Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS II, Canon 10-22mm, Canon 18-55mm. I also have an 430EX II external flash and a 5 in one reflector.Feedback
Early morning after breakfast is a great time for a photo shoot like this with children because they are well rested, playful and happy. It is also a good time to photograph pets with them. This did not require any set up, but just following around the little girl and her dog while they play. I also was looking for good back lighting to create a rim light around the girl and her dog. My advice is not to think too technical. Try and get all the technical planning done well before you start the shoot. It is about enjoying following them around and letting yourself get caught up in their little playful world and the mood of it. When you find a spot with that great morning light, find creative ways to encourage them to play in that area by hunting for insects or something to get their interest. Then start shooting like crazy and one of them most likely will be what you were wanting to capture. I used the 70-200mm lens and felt like it is such a great lens for this type of shooting. I love the way it gets sharp detail of both the girl and her dog. It has become one of my top favorite lenses!
