Location
I captured the image in the flower garden at the Museum of Life and Science, in Durham, NC.Time
It was around 9am, on a clear morning, with mild temperature. There was very little wind.Lighting
The flower was under the shade of a nearby tree, so there was diffused lighting, which helped saturate the colors.Equipment
I captured the image with a Nikon D7100 and Sigma 120-400mm/f4.5-5.6 lens, mounted on a tripod.Inspiration
The vibrant colors of the flower called me to photograph it. The flower was perfect, with all its petals in tact.Editing
I didn't have to do any special post processing, as the flowers colors were saturated from being in the shade of a tree.In my camera bag
I always carry two Nikons and sometimes three. Most always two D7100's, with a Sigma 500mm/f4.5 and Sigma 120-400mm/f4.4-5.6 lens. In addition, I sometimes carry one of my full frame cameras, either a D3X or D610, along with a 105mm/f2.8 macro, 14-24mm/f2.8 and 24-120mm/f4 lens. I also carry remote releases, circular polarizers, ND filters, diffuser screen and I never go out without a tripod.Feedback
Early morning is the best time, because the light is usually better and wind is usually less. If the flower is in direct sun, you can use a diffuser shield to soften the light and better saturate the colors. If you don't have a diffuser screen, you can get someone or yourself to stand I a position that puts shade on the subject. A tripod is mandatory, so as to elimanate camera shake, providing a crisp image.
