Location
I was able to capture this image of a jaguar while on a visit to the Montgomery Zoo, in Montgomery, Alabama. The jaguar looked so peaceful, to be such a fierce predator.Time
I came up to the enclosure of the jaguar around noon. I set my tripod down and captured the image of the beautiful big cat.Lighting
It was a mix of sun and clouds, with more cloud coverage when I took this shot. The temperature was in the 80's. To assure a stable shot, I bumped the ISO up to 400.Equipment
I captured the image with a Nikon D90 and Sigma 120-400mm/f4.5-5.6 lens, mounted on a Bogen tripod. I shot the image in aperture priority mode, at f/5.6Inspiration
I have always loved the powerful beauty of a jaguar. When I discovered that the Montgomery Zoo had one, I had to visit the zoo and photograph it.Editing
I didn't have to do any special post-processing.In my camera bag
I typically carry two Nikon cameras, usually D7100's, along with a Sigma 500mm/f4.5 and Sigma 120-400mm/f4.5-5.6 lenses, when shooting wildlife. When shooting landscapes or flora, I carry a Nikon D610 and D3x, along with 105mm/f2.8 macro, 14-24mm/f2.8 and 24-120/f4 Nikkor lenses. I also carry a remote release, and never go out without a tripod.Feedback
If you can't go the the region where a subject is in the wild, zoos are a great alternative for great captures. National parks, as well as city parks are great spots for wildlife as well.
