Behind The Lens

Location

I captured the image of the cougar at the North Carolina Zoo, in Asheboro, NC.

Time

I took the image at 9am. I went directly to the cougar exhibit as soon as the gates opened, so as to get images before others arrived at the exhibit.

Lighting

It was an overcast day, as well as a cold day.

Equipment

I captured the image using a Nikon D300s and Sigma 500mm/f4.5 lens, on an Oben ballhead mounted on a Bogen tripod. I set the ISO at 250 and shot wide open for 1/160th of a second.

Inspiration

I have always been fascinated by the majesty of the cougar. I wanted to capture that majesty in a head shot. I wanted the eyes to draw the viewer in.

Editing

There was no special post processing.

In my camera bag

I usually carry an extra body, as well as teleconverter, circular polarizer, spare memory cards, cleaning kit, macro lens, and a wide angle zoom lens.

Feedback

To capture an image like this, several things need to occur. The lighting needs to be just right, the animal has to cooperate by being in a good position for the shot and finally, you have to be ready to fire the shutter when that moment comes.
