Location
This photo was taken on the backside of the famous Blue Lagoon, in the midst of a vast lava field .Time
I was staying right nearby , and walked through the lava field along the paths , late at night.Lighting
It was a concept I had in mind to try. I have been doing night time photography and light painting for several years now . On this trip I brought with me light painting supplies . I had been on standby to get a helicopter flight out to the active volcano, but weather was too severe to fly. Instead I used a laser pen to trace the contours of the lava formations, the heat of this light simulating hot lavaEquipment
I use the Canon 6D , the Canon EF 16-35 1:2.8 L, Gitzo tripod , RRS ball head , plus laser pen for light painting .Inspiration
This was an entirely original idea , I have never seen or tried anything quite like this before , although I have played with light painting and fire for a few years . To be alone, surrounded by the otherworldly landscape of this lava field , and downstream from the geothermal power plant- at night time- was very peaceful . I stayed out there a few hours , trying all different compositions. This one was the best of the lot.Editing
This image required very little in post processing, mainly Lightroom. In my camera bag
My main kit includes the 6D body plus several Canon lenses . My favorite has been the 16-35, I also have the EF 24-105 1:4 L, and EF 70-200 1:4 L IS, plus various filters including B & W soft ND grad , various polarizing filters and Singh-Ray Mor Slo ND-10 .Feedback
My advice would be to think outside the box more . With ultra high ISO capabilities now and low noise , astrophotography and nighttime imaging has become quite popular especially Milky Way and aurora . I had neither one that night but was determined to make the most of this one special night in the middle of Winter .
