Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in Iceland in March 2013, over the infamous volcano Eyjafjallajokul.

Time

The photo was captured late morning . During this time of year, there are limited daylight hours.

Lighting

This epic storm was considered one of the worst to hit Iceland in 20 years . It stranded our small group in our hotel in Reykjavik for 2 frustrating days as we had to wait for the roads to reopen . We departed during white out conditions , often unable to see the edges of the road . Winds were constant at 65 mph gusting to 95 mph! This is hurricane force winds and we photographed in this all week. Upon seeing these spectacular cloud structures , moving rapidly , it was a Stop the Car moment !

Equipment

I used my brand new Canon 6D , and Canon's 16-35 2.8 favorite lens to capture these swiftly moving clouds , with amazing light in a horizontal band illuminating the scene dramatically . With winds so strong there was no chance at using a tripod - in fact to stabilize myself I had to shoot this from my knees .

Inspiration

I love dramatic skies! Give me departing storms over blue sky any day! These were by far the most spectacular clouds I had ever seen. The images I took that day remain some of my all time personal favorites, never to be repeated .

Editing

This image only needed minimal processing in Lightroom , correcting contrast mainly .

In my camera bag

Aside from previously mentioned Canon 6D and wide angle, I carry Canon EF 24-105 1:4 L, Sigma 50mm 1.4 prime, and Canon EF 70-200 1:4 L. I use various ND grad filters , Gitzo tripod outfitted with RRS ball head .

Feedback

Adverse weather conditions can yield some of the very best lighting . I constantly monitor weather reports where I am, especially departing rain or snow storms . When light fills the foreground against dark clouds , this is my favorite light .
