Wow ! What an amazing photograph !
The eerie ice formations and moody sky contrasting against the glowing red tower are truly exceptional.

Location
This is the light station located at the entry to Muskegon Harbor in Muskegon, Michigan. It sits out in the water and is connected to the beach area by a concrete and rock break wall. During the summer months, people walk out on the break wall to catch the gorgeous sunsets. But during the winter, the walk is very treacherous. I invested in a set of ice cleats which attach to my boots and then very carefully made my way all the way out to the lighthouse to capture this shot.Time
In winter, the splashing waves of Lake Michigan can create some amazing ice "sculptures". 2015 was an incredible year along the coast. There were ice caves created by the wind, water, and freezing temperatures for the first time in years. As the storms on the lake bring huge waves into the beach areas, the water splashes up so high and then freezes.Lighting
Since this was taken during the middle of the day, the lighting is natural sunlight with a few high clouds to soften.Equipment
Nikon D7000, Nikkor 18-200 lensInspiration
The amazing ice buildup along the beaches of Lake Michigan is always worth the nerve-wracking hike on the icy break wall. Every year, winter is different and presents such great photo ops!Editing
This was edited with Photomatix giving it more defined lines in the ice.In my camera bag
In my bag, I always carry extra lenses, batteries, SD cards, and, because I need it as a reference tool, the camera instruction book.Feedback
The Great Lakes create their own "artwork", always changing but also alway beautiful. The breezes coming across the lake from Wisconsin makes the weather a major element in what happens at he beach. The wind is constantly blowing sand around and brings so many different and unique shapes. One can get a different photo at the same spot every single day. It is like a living being!
