Location
Winter along Michigan's west coast can be brutal at times. Storms with very high winds come across Lake Michigan and when they reach the various harbors, waves crash and then ice builds up. This shows the lighthouse at Muskegon Harbor during a particularly wild storm. The ice has built up on top of the lighthouse and the waves splash shows how the build-up happens. I love living along Michigan's west coast!Time
This was taken in the early evening, thus the darker sky behind the lighthouse. I had to put on ice cleats to walk out on the ice-covered break wall to get this shot.Lighting
The storm brought a very dark sky with it so I set my ISO at 200 to allow for more light and to highlight the white of the ice and water.Equipment
I shoot mainly with a Nikon D7000 and did use a tripod on this because of the wind and movement in the splash. The only other equipment used were ice cleats on my shoes and a Lands' End Squall Coat and mittens!Inspiration
Winters can be especially picturesque in the upper midwest. I try to get out and photograph as much as I can to show off the incredible beauty here. A lot of people head south to warmer climates. But not me. I put on a coat and go out with my camera.Editing
I do as little post-processing as possible. I usually only do basic editing such a cropping, straightening, sharpening, and sometimes some color enhancement to get the image to match what I saw when I took the image. In my camera bag
I always have my Nikon D7000 and sometimes my Nikon D5300. I carry a couple lenses such as wide angle, zoom, and sometimes my fisheye lens. I always have an extra charged battery and a few extra SD cards. And just in case of an emergency, I also carry a rain cover and a lens cloth as well as the camera manual.Feedback
Patience, time, and warm clothing are a must when working with the unpredictable wind and cold temperatures. It took many trips down to the beach to finally be able to capture the splash of Lake Michigan at just the right moment.
