Behind The Lens

Location

Old Mill Park in Sciota, Pennsylvania.

Time

Happened to pass by this Old Mill in the morning and decided to stop and check it out. The park was empty so I decide to get the camera out and do some time exposures.

Lighting

It was an overcast morning with a slight drizzle. The sun was trying to peek through some breaks in the clouds but it was not looking good for any sunshine soon so I decided to go with the light I had. The lighting work out well for the long exposure I wanted to go with for this shot.

Equipment

I used a canon 70D with a Canon 10-18mm lens on a tripod and shutter release cable. I pre focused the shot, turned Auto Focus and IS off and then added a B+W SC 110 Solid Neutral Density 3.0 (10 Stop) filter. Exposure was 30 sec @ f10 ISO 320

Inspiration

I had seen other photos of this Mill and thought, with the waterfall and fast moving water, it would be perfect for a long time exposure. The photo was take from and old bridge that runs across the creek, next to the mill.

Editing

Photo was imported into Lightroom and white balance was adjusted as well as highlights and shadows. Saturation was increased slightly for yellow, orange and green to bring out some pop to the color.

In my camera bag

I do not go anywhere without my camera bag. I have the Canon 70D with a Canon 18-135mm IS STM as the main camera and a Canon T3i, body as a spare. Also in my bag is a Canon 10-18mm lens, for instances I want more coverage or a wider perspective. I also carry a Bell & Howell 8mm fisheye, a Sigma 150-600mm DG OS HSM and a Canon 60mm f2.8 macro. I also carry a speed light with remote triggers.

Feedback

This Mill ,as well as many others, is a very busy spot for both visitors and photographers. Weather, timing and time of day are big factors with shooting these types of places if you want to keep people and other distractions out of the frame. I have been back here a couple times since this photograph and had to wait for other photographers to leave, people to move. The bridge this was taken from did shake as people walked across it so I had to time my shots in between people walking across and even wait for people to move off the bridge. As for the photo itself, a sturdy tripod is highly recommended as well as a remote trigger or shutter release cable to avoid camera shake. If using a very dark ND filter remember to pre focus without the filter then turn auto focus off before putting the filter on. Image stabilization can also be turned off if using a tripod. Be patient and take a few photos, and have fun.
