Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a trip in Yelm, Washington. It was interesting to find a pocket of light among the overcast.

Time

I absolutely love this image, because it was the first one I took this year. This photo was taken in the first week of 2017, around 3:00 pm.

Lighting

The lighting was tough. The weather was full of overcast, and the light would peak in and out. The rest was shooting around the sun peaking in and out.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D750 and Nikon 135mm f/2.0 lens handheld. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

My inspiration for this image stemmed from watching my kids growing up dependent on technology. When we took this trip to Washington, I wanted to unplug and give my kids an adventure. A real adventure, not one they would see on You-tube. The image is named "conscious" because I wanted to implement the here and now, the beautiful nature that surrounds us, and the things we take for granted.

Editing

The location in this image was originally a puke green, with dead shrubs and not the ideal look I was going for. I wanted a rich and isolated type image to convey my message. For post processing, I altered the green, added some dust particles, and enhanced the natural highlights in her hair. I also added in the butterfly. This was all done in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

My must haves are my Nikon D750 and Sigma 50 mm 1.4 Art lens. These pieces are so versatile. I also tend to cling to my Nikkor 135mm f/2.0, especially when I am trying to create something magical.

Feedback

Patience is key. Patience with the child, Patience with the ever-changing weather, and Patience with the message you are wanting to convey. The final image I produced was very close to what I had envisioned in my mind.
