This photo was taken at Fort Steilacoom Park in Washington. It is a beautiful place, that will always hold a special place in my heart.Time
I remember taking this photo like it was just yesterday. It was 10:30 AM and I had just wrapped up a previous shoot. It was about 65 degrees outside with no wind. Not too hot, and not to cold with beautiful overcast. The perfect time to create something magical. This was taken on November 8th, 2014 at 10:30 AM.Lighting
I love shooting on days where the weather shows a slight precipitation and chance of rain. On days like these, The sky turns in to a giant soft box, and the lighting becomes phenomenal.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D7100, with 50mm f/1.8 lens. No other equipment was involved.Inspiration
In mid- October, I received a message from the model's mother. She was interested in doing photos for her daughter and informed me that her daughter was being tested for Autism. She was worried her daughter wouldn't cooperate in the session. I knew the session might be challenging, but I wanted the mother to have photos that she could forever cherish. The mother added that her daughter loved to look at herself in the mirror, and that she was bringing a full body mirror along to help her daughter stay calm. On the day of the shoot, i moved a couple of other client's sessions around to have more time with her. I really wanted everything to go smoothly and have more time if we needed it. We planned for the large mirror to be behind me so I could get her smiling at the camera. At one point, we set the mirror on the fence and this sweet little girl started giving me the most precious of poses. All of our previous worries melted away with every pose. It became a little girl in her own world and in the end it was her who inspired me.Editing
This particular image was post-processed in Adobe Lightroom. If I remember correctly, I used the radial filter to darken some areas. I also tweaked the temp and played around with the exposure, shadows, and vibrant sliders. In my camera bag
Honestly, I only pack my Nikon d7100, 50mm f/1.8 and 85mm f/1.8. I don't own the fanciest equipment. I shoot with what I can afford at the moment. Those three pieces of equipment have been amazing to me.Feedback
The best advice I can give is to go with the flow. Working with young children requires patience and loosening of the reigns. Children are unpredictable and that's what makes them unique. The best images I get of children, are of them doing what they love. Find what they love and follow their lead. Seeing the world through the eyes of a child is so humbling. It also helps to have a giant soft box made of clouds blocking the sun and orange leaves falling all around.
