Location
This image was captured in Bolivia during a visit to Sol de Mañana, meaning Morning Sun in Spanish, which is a geothermal field in Sur Lípez Province in the Potosi Department of south-western Bolivia. This area is characterized by intense volcanic activity and the sulphur springs field, not geysers as sometimes it can be read, is full of mud lakes and steam pools with boiling mud. Very dramatic landscape and wonderful for photographers as you can see here!Time
Not really sure about the time of day, but judging by the position of the sun it could have been mid afternoon. As you can see, I was shooting into the sun, but the steam clouds blocked a lot of it out which created an interesting effect.I have other similar images from this photoshoot which are mostly in color.Lighting
Sometimes in these kind of special conditions shooting into the sun can create interesting and dramatic effects. All natural lighting and no flash. Experiment.Equipment
Canon Rebel xt5i with my favorite Canon lens 18-135mm - only a UV protective filter. Hand held, no tripod - I like to travel light!Inspiration
I was inspired by the amazing geographical landscape and geothermal conditions (along with all the other photographers!) I often like to show other photographers at work, and I often get inspiration from them as well.Editing
Basically transforming the image from color to black and white and some minimal cropping and simple Lightroom adjustments. I do not use photoshop. In my camera bag
2 camera bodies - Canon xt5i (my go to workhorse for hand held) and Canon full frame 7D plus Canon18-135mm and 10-18mm, Canon 100-400mm for wildlife, extra batteries and sd cards, battery charger, cleaning kit, card reader.Feedback
Just always be open to whatever you encounter as far as subject matter, weather conditions, lighting etc. There is always something great to capture and the bigger challenges sometimes create the best results. Happy shooting!
