Location
In Huntington Beach, California. Summer.
Time
This was very late afternoon just before sunset when there were some long shadows and the sinking sun was highlighting the back of the
kite-surfer and the splashing waves which made it ideal for a silhouette with added highlights and still allowed the horizon and the clouds to be seen.
Lighting
I always prefer to shoot in natural light. The late afternoon sun gave me ideal lighting for this kind of effect - timing is everything!
Equipment
I used a Canon xt5i with an 18-135 Canon lens, hand held.

Inspiration
We were down at the beach close to sunset, and there were a lot of kite surfers out in the ocean. I loved the lighting and saw an opportunity to get some good action shots with natural effects. I edited this into black and white because it looks much more dramatic.
Editing
I use LightRoom for post-processing. I cropped this image and used a little sharpening and changed the image to black and white. I use the minimum LR processing if possible, and I do not use Photoshop. Except in certain circumstances or wanting to change an image drastically, I try to keep my images as close to the original as possible.
In my camera bag
2 Canon bodies - 7D (mostly I use this for still life) and Rebel xt5i (lighter and good for sports etc.), 18-135mm, 10-18mm, 75-300mm, extra batteries, extra SD cards, lens hoods, filters uv and polarizer, cleaning kit, tripod, battery chargers.
Feedback
Carry at least one camera wherever you go if possible and I take my i-phone as well. Be prepared for sun, rain, wind, or clouds. Obviously when trying to capture rapidly moving objects (like the kite-surfer) use a fast shutter speed and take lots of images if you want them sharp. I delete a large portion of my images, which is the beauty of digital, and only keep the very best...so have spare cards so you do not run out of space and miss that special moment!
