Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my kitchen window.

Time

This was around noon.

Lighting

Since my kitchen window faces South, I get a beautiful light that comes in around 11am and lasts until around 1pm. This always gives great opportunities to catch great shadowing and highlights.

Equipment

I was testing out my new Nikon D810 at the time, using my Nikon 50mm 1.4f lens. I am very trained on handheld captures and not moving, as I shoot a lot in Cathedrals in Europe where flash is prohibited, and carrying a tripod is not really convenient. It is a skill that has helped immensely in quick capture situations.

Inspiration

I had just received my new camera and wanted to test it out immediately. The flowers in the kitchen caught the perfect lighting to do just that. Since the Nikon D810 has the Black and White feature, I wanted to test it out to see how the contrast would look at different settings. This was the perfect opportunity.

Editing

I try to capture photos in camera as I would like to see them, so I do as little post processing as possible on all the photos I take. My time is very limited, and I used to spend many hours post processing photos. I finally put forth great effort into learning the capabilities of my cameras, lighting, lenses, and have to now spend minimal time in post.

In my camera bag

I carry my main camera, depending on which one I will be using that day. Then depending on the type of shoot, I will carry about 3 other lenses to have variety. Towels, brushes, lens wipes, and filters for the shoot.

Feedback

The Southern sun, depending on where you live, is an ideal source of natural light. It is my favorite source of light for indoor shooting. It gives a soft feel, diffused glow to subjects. Any light in a window can be used to capture great shots!
