We were lucky enough to see several condors flying overhead while hiking along the coast near Big Sur, California in October 2015. Brought back from the brink of extinction by the Sespe Project, condors were re-released back into the wild beginning in 1992. They have since made a huge comeback and can now be seen in several areas throughout California, especially along the Monterey coastline and Pinnacles National Monument. All condors have identifying wing tags. If you look at the back of a 2005 California state quarter you will see a condor depicted. Though not beautiful to look at, condors are a vital part of the natural world. They are majestic in flight with a wingspan up to 9 1-2 feet and can live up to be 50 years old.
