Location
This photo was taken while I was in photography school, at Antonelli Institute. We had an assignment to create a personal photography series (the only requirement was a specific number of photos to complete the series) the rest was up to us. So I decided to do my series about candy and models and shot it in one of the school's studios.Time
It was taken at night after classes were done for the day.Lighting
I used three lights: two lights with stripboxes on either side of my model and one hard light with a 10 degree honeycomb grid on the lollipop.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D7000, with a Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 lens, three Paul C Buff Alienbees (one 800 and two 400s) flash units, two stripboxes, and one 10 degree honeycomb grid.Inspiration
I have a major sweet tooth and I love to experiment with different elements in my photos so I decided to do candy, but I also love using people in most of my images so I tried to think of a way to incorporate a person but without the typical cute licking a lollipop photo.Editing
I only post processed the image a little bit. The lollipop had some scratches on it so I cleaned them up, bumped up the saturation and contrast just a tad, and made it a bit brighter to really pop and stand out from my model. In my camera bag
In my camera bag you'll find a Nikon D7000 with a battery grip attached, a Nikkor zoom 55-200mm f/4-5.6 lens and a kit lens 18-105mm (just in case I need it), but my Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 lens is my baby and that's the one I mostly use while shooting. I also take a Nikon SB-900 AF Speedlight Flash for emergencies or if I have limited space, but if I'm going on location and I can manage I love taking my hot pink Alienbees with a fully charged vagabond to really light up my subject!Feedback
Some advice for capturing something similar...find a willing participant, but don't be pushy or creepy when you ask them to pose for such a provocative style image. Remember to light the object as well as the model. Have fun, and play around with lighting styles, objects, and poses. Experimenting is a necessary factor when creating interesting imagery!
