Location
This photo was taken at a park not far from where I live in Hampton,VA, USA. Being an amateur photographer and loving the outdoors visiting parks, beaches, and other rural areas I often just ride around looking at my surroundings. often revisiting the same places but at various times a day.Time
This photo was taken in the early morning on Thanksgivings day. I've visited this same park many times but this particular fall morning just provided the best light I had ever seen at this location.Lighting
The early morning sunlight shining towards me through these trees produced a mystical like setting. The sunlight not only made the yellow leave more transparent but it also reflected a shimmer off of the water. I positioned myself shooting from several different angles but once I sat down and went through all the shots I found that what I liked the most were the the shot taken straight ahead into the sunlight. At this time of day the sun was positioned in the upper left ( eastward) of this photo which was just perfect for where I was standing and the trees in that area also had the most leaves still on them.Equipment
My camera was my very first DSLR a Nikon D60. Using the Nikon 55-200mm lens with an UV filter. Flash not needed. I started off using it on a tripod trying to avoid camera shake but I was taking my photos from a foot bridge. Being early morning there were a number of people getting in their morning jogs and this was producing camera shake as they were running by me. So I ended up removing the tripod and going at it without. I do admit I was proud to get this shot with minimal shake of my own.Inspiration
I love the out doors. And for me fall is a great season to capture natures beauty. After having visited this park the previous winter, spring, and summer I knew I had to give fall it's turn. Didn't know for sure what to expect for autumn colors and the summer gave no clue but I was very please with what I saw. In this particular location the trees were mostly all the same type so there wasn't a great variation in colors but it was that sunlight shinning through them that set the scene and produced it's magic.Editing
Post-processing was next to none. One of those rare opportunities when nature set a perfect scene. Just a little cropping for the size of the prints I wanted to make. Being the amateur that I am I didn't know how to use photoshop. In my camera bag
At the time I took this photo I had the Nikon D60 DSLR, the kit 18-55mm lens, 55-200mm lens and a 50mm prime lens in my bag.Feedback
In landscape and outdoor photography I discovered revisiting the same location at different times of the day and different seasons of the year will yield pleasing differences in what you photograph. An area that may seem to be of little interest at one time often show a different side of itself when given another chance later on. I try to keep my camera in my car as much as possible and try to drive around somewhere a little different several times a month. I find morning light in fall and winter seems to be a little softer than in the spring and summer. Especially where I live on the US east coast .
