This photo was taken at Sandy Bottom Nature Park in Hampton,VA, USATime
It was late afternoon around 3pm in Nov. 2013.Lighting
The natural lighting from the sun provided a nice reflection off the water and being that it was late afternoon the sun wasn't to blindingly harsh. I was facing east photographing from a pier across the lake with more of the sun behind me in the west.Equipment
I was using my Nikon D60 DSLR with the 55-200mm F/4.0-5.6 lens with a UV filter, ISO 250, F/4.2 and shutter 1/125. Tripod was used, flash not needed.Inspiration
Fall is may favorite time of the year for outdoor photography. I'm drawn to colors and this park has a wide variety of trees native to Virginia. This scene provided water, color and texture in the contrasting white wooden viewing platform.Editing
This turned out to be one of those exceptional out of the camera shots. Only did a little cropping in Apple's iPhoto to take out the extra sky at the top of the photograph. Wanted the focus to be on the trees, viewing platform and waters reflection. In my camera bag
My camera is the Nikon D60 DSLR. I travel with the AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm F/4.0-5.6, AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 3.5-5.6, and a AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1.8 prime lenses. UV and CPL Filters. Nikon Speedlight SB 50DX external flash.Feedback
What I've discovered worked best for me is to photograph reflections in the late afternoon with the sun behind you. This photo was taken around 3pm on a November afternoon. There was still about 2 and a half hours before sunset putting the sun in a great position. Using a tripod is a sure way to avoid camera shake. This can be a busy park so I chose to go during the week when I could be mostly alone on the pier I was shooting from. No stomping vibrations from others feet.
