beautiful place and very cool when seen

Behind The Lens

Location

This is a narrow section of a tropical lake in Mexico, where the water flows swiftly from one naturally filtered section of the lake to another larger area of a lake. The "rocks" you see are actually stromatolites - so called "living fossils" and the oldest living things on earth. 3.5 billion some odd years old, and only found in 3 places in the world. Unfortunately, all the stromatolites here are dead from humans touching them. :( They are still alive in other areas around the lakes, but in serious danger due to humans. Touch, sunblock, boating, pesticides, all of it is slowly killing these ancient growths (and source of oxygen!).

Time

This was mid to late afternoon on an overcast fall day.

Lighting

As much as full on sun makes this water sparkle like you wouldn't believe, the overcast afternoon actually reduced the contrast and harsh shadows. Phew!

Equipment

DJI Mavic Pro - the cute one that folds up about the size of a soda can. (We have since gone even smaller, because of increasing drone regulations; do NOT forget to register your drone, don't fly where you aren't supposed to, and be sure you double check drone rules and laws when you travel!)

Inspiration

It's BEAUTIFUL - how could you NOT love a place that looks this magical? I'm also glad to have this image, as the increase in tourism to this small town has overwhelmed the infrastructure, and it already looks worse for the wear. I'm glad I got to see it before it was loved to death. I will forever be glad to have this image and other videos from this day (and previous trips).

Editing

This was shot as a DNG and brought into Photoshop where it was cropped and slight contrast adjustments were made - but no heavy hand here was needed!

In my camera bag

These days it's a Nikon D800 or D850 or both depending on the adventure. Sigma ART lenses (24mm, 50mm, 135mm) and the Nikon 80-400. ND filter and CPL. Spare batteries. Two Nikon speedlights. Occasionally a custom underwater camera housing for the D800. Microfiber cleaning cloths. Snickers bar (or similar). Tripod mounting plates. Sometimes a GoPro and sometimes a DJI drone.

Feedback

The time of day and weather can really change the look of a place! The best way to photograph a place is to get to know it and its different moods - it can be fun for example to shoot the same place during different times of year or at different times of day - but knowing when it looks the way you want it to look in the final image means it's a lot less work in post! Clouds made this scene much less hectic with no harsh shadows and blown out highlights, but still allowed the colors to shine and be the star of the show. So think not just about what you want to shoot, but when, and even how weather changes the look.
