Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in St. Petersburg, Russia. I just bought a fisheye and walked in the yards of the city in search of interesting shots.

Time

The photo was taken at night. From a distance, I saw that on one of the courtyards there are outbreaks. It turned out that someone on the roof ran fireworks. And since I did not know how long it will last all had to try to understand the desired composition and camera settings very quickly.

Lighting

In rare windows lights, courtyard were not lit and there was nothing but sometimes appearing fireworks.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D300, with an Sigma 8mm 3.5. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

St. Petersburg - a city yard - "wells" - this is when a small courtyard on all sides surrounded by a total of four walls of houses. Almost every person who has ever visited St. Petersburg, has a photo of the yard - a piece of heaven among walls. So finally got hold of a suitable lens for this shoot, I immediately wanted to do great photos.

Editing

Since I have not been with a tripod, and the fireworks did not appear in the most ideal locations for shooting, this picture eventually collected from several frames that are best suited, and was the least blurred. After that, in order to reduce the visibility of post-processing, it had to be transferred to BW.

In my camera bag

Usually, when I go out on a photographic walk around the city, I take the "reportage" kit. It includes Nikon D3s (although now I started using Nikon Df), Nikkor 80-200 2.8, Nikkor 24-70 2.8, Sigma 15mm 2.8 Fisheye, and Nikkor 50 1.8. With such a focal length and aperture I can take pictures of practically any urban plot at any time of the day. Before 2011, I was limited to Nikon D300, Nikkor 85 1.4D, Tokina 16-50 2.8 and Sigma 8mm 3.5.

Feedback

If in the dark is not possible to remove a sharp picture with it, then you need a tripod. But some things can be too fast to have time to get a tripod and place. Therefore, immediately adjust the best camera so that the picture will not let too much quality, but the moment will not be missed. It also helps continuous shooting with minimal movement to at least a few shots out sharp.
