Show this image in the streets of Lowell, MA. This is my wonderful neighbor! She was nice enough to come with me and climb on a ladder for me :) This is place that is really close to a river and lots of people walk by every day. We had so many people stop and ask what we were doing :) It was fun, but because we had so many people watching it took quite a bit to get the shots necessary for the composite. I had to use many different layers and brushes to get the effect, but I love the results. The many hours of photoshop were worth it! Don't you think?

Location
I made this image in the old industrial city of Lowell, MA. This particular location is a beautiful spot by the Merrimack River in one of the old mills. The city is full of fantastic spots that are both historic and beautiful. I would usually walk by this wall and wonder what I could do with it, I knew I had to use it for one of my images. The beautiful woman in the image is my neighbor and really good friend, she was kind enough to help me :)Time
This is a wall that is protected from direct light most of the day, so I decided to shoot at around noon. This way, even though we were going to work int he shade, I would have enough light to play around. The day was beautiful and I had plenty of natural diffused light to work with.Lighting
I love working with natural light, specially for this type of work. I believe that when it comes to surreal images flash can sometimes contribute to the "fake" look some struggle with. This is why I prefer choosing my time of day carefully. I usually want to shoot an image with very low contrast so I can have some wiggle room in post production. Working with the models on location is also something that can be helpful. It not only gives them a better sense of what I am envisioning for the image, but it also allows us to play around with different options and ideas.Equipment
I shot this with my wonderful Canon 7D using a 24-70 mm lens. I always use a tripod for composites ;) not a really good one, but one that is stable. Also, I should mention that she was standing on a ladder at the time. This particular location is pretty close to my old apartment, so it was a fairly interesting walk... with all my equipment and the ladder ;)Inspiration
2 things inspired me, the location and my model. I met Jen because we were neighbors. She is such a strong woman, honest, hardworking, and smart. Her favorite color is yellow, and this is how I chose the effect. I think she is a force to be reckoned with! Also, the location is beautiful, it is a structure that has been there for a long time, has seen many changes, and is still standing. I believe they both had many things in common and I wanted to be able to create something that would reflect that.Editing
Many many hours of photoshop. If you have seen some of my other images of dresses you will notice that I use only one brush to create the illusion of the dress; I change the color, orientation, and size of the brush, but I usually only have to use one. This image is different, I used 18 brushes for the effect of fire, all of them different. If I had used only one brush the effect would have been repetitive and not looked believable, so I had to work with 18 brushes... it added quite a bit of time to my process, but I love the result! In my camera bag
I carry two camera bodies just in case I drop one (I am a little clumsier than I would like to admit) : Canon 5D Mark III and Canon 7D. I also have a 50 mm prime, 70-200 mm, 24-70 mm, and a 10-22 mm. I always have a grey card, a tripod, and a reflector with me.Feedback
Plan ahead! Think about what you want to create before you leave your house! Also, know that these images take a lot of time to create and be prepared for a process that can sometimes seem a little boring and repetitive. The magic is in the details!
