Location
I snapped this photo during winter of 2014 in the Pacific Northwest tip of Oregon where I grew up.Time
It was about 8:00 AM and frost was still on the ground. It was almost surreal...Lighting
I used natural lighting with no flash. I believe it was all about keeping the ISO's low and adjusting the other variables.Equipment
I used a Canon 7D with Canon 24-70mm 2.8L lens. It was handheld and all I really wanted to do was find the best framing that naturally caught my attention.Inspiration
Since I now live in Los Angeles, every time I go to Oregon, I try to capture as much of the natural beauty of the environment as possible. I had walked 2.5 miles to get here and had been snapping photos the whole time but naturally, I like to take landscape photos more than up-close and personal while I'm in such a beautiful environment since most the photo shoots I do in LA are "in your face" and a bit claustrophobic at times. I saw this giant tree there and remembered how beautiful it is in the summer so I felt compelled to snap a photo of it.Editing
I didn't like all the color within the original photo and edited it to be black and white to enhance the energy and mood of the environment. I'm glad I did! I used Adobe Lightroom 5 with a BW preset. In my camera bag
Canon 7D (for now until I can upgrade), Canon 24-70mm 2.8L lens, 480EXII (rarely use), tripod and sometimes a monopod. I don't have much equipment but try to maximize with what I do have. I'd like to get a MarkIII or maybe Mark IV soon or at some point a Hassleblad or Phase One and compare the differences of quality.Feedback
Look for what sparkles in your eye and always look for good lighting. Personally, I always look for awesome lighting and I don't really care what's in the lighting, I always feel the urge to snap a photo whether with my DSLR or IPhone. I've snapped many super creative photos that way that other people would easily have missed. (I kind of treat it like someone looking for rare Pokemon's, you never know where you'll find the next super rare shot!) Also, if you're not satisfied with your photos with the raw look, use editing software and give it a creative "bang" by color correcting. It just might be the different between a good and great finished piece. I like to snap photos I don't think anybody else would, because then the world is more saturated with the same content and not as unique. My approach is try to find a way to shoot anything original, that captures the energy of the subject matter and tells a story or stories within the frame. Try to add value, inspiration or entertainment with any shot you take and people will appreciate it more. Snap as much as possible but try to challenge yourself to "get it right the first time" and you'll see better results faster.
