Location
This photo was taken at Minnetrista Gardens in Muncie, Indiana. Their grounds are absolutely gorgeous!Time
This was taken late in the evening. We were raising the sun to get the last few shots from this session. The lighting here was so soft and perfect.Lighting
This was during golden hour. It was in the middle of our session. We ended up racing the light at the end of the shoot, but here the light was still very good. She was facing into the light which gave me gorgeous shadows and highlights to work with.Equipment
This was shot with my Canon Rebel T2i and an 18-55mm kit lens.Inspiration
I wanted to capture a few images of my daughter in her Halloween costume before she outgrew it, so I took her over to my favorite location. She was being a typical three year old who was a bit tired and not very interested in photos. At one point she stalked away from me, and stood behind a tree. "I'm not going to smile anymore" she growled. My brother was along with us, and started making funny faces at her. I was stepping back to get a photo of the two of them, when I glanced through the branches of the tree and saw how perfectly they framed her. I pulled up my camera just in time to catch a little glimmer of a smirk as she tried not to laugh at him.Editing
This was one of my first attempts at a more fine art feeling. I used several actions from Greater Than Gatsby and a few textures from Jessica Drossin. I really couldn't begin to tell you what I actually did. I just kept playing with this photo in my down time. It was sort of a stress relief for me. I actually have 5-6 or six different versions of edits on this same photo. My goal for this one was a soft dreamy portrait that made the viewer think of fairyland. In my camera bag
I'm still building my collection. Right now I have a Canon Rebel T2i, a couple kit lenses, extra batteries, extra flash drives, a wallet for filled flash drives, a reflector, and then a few odds and ends like chapstick, a comb, a sewing kit, and safety pins.Feedback
Honestly with this one, it's just being prepared to go with the flow. My daughter wouldn't stand by an arch that I wanted, she walked away to hide behind a tree. Look at your surroundings. Take a shot, then ask yourself if it would be better from a different location. Let your subject stay where they are, and you move around them looking for the best angle. Don't be so set on one specific shot that you miss the great shot two or three steps in either direction. This is something I'm still learning.
