This was taken on Assateague Island, south of Ocean City, MD.Time
Early morning, near sunrise, 6:30 AM'ishLighting
Early morning light, some of the best light of the day. This particular morning was a bit overcast, so I used a fill flash from my Canon 580EX equipped with a softbox.Equipment
Handheld with a Canon 5DMKII fitted with a 17-40 f/4L and a 580EX Speedlight. Why a superwide? I had planned on shooting landscapes.Inspiration
I was in Ocean City for the weekend and decided to take a side trip to Assateague Island for a sunrise session. It turned out to be a bit too overcast for good color, as you can see in this pic. As I walking down the beach, looking for some decent foreground interest, I happened to spot this pair of wild horses strolling along the surf. And BAM!, there was my FG interest. As I started to make my way around the horses, they both decided to lie down. And the rest is here in this pictureEditing
I used a gradient filter in Lightroom to darken the sky, then adjusted the contrast and levels to bring out the horses in the foreground. Pretty simple RAW editing. In my camera bag
Canon 5DMKII, Canon 7D and occasionally a Life Pixel modified T1i. Canon 17-40 f/4L or 24-70 f2.8L, 70-200 f/2.8L ISII, Canon 50mm f/1.4 Lee Filter system, Lee GND filters, SinghRay RGND, Satechi remote release, Yongnou wireless triggers, Wrigleys Cobalt gum.Feedback
This is where the adage, beware of your surroundings, truly comes into play. Capturing these horses was not my planned session. Capturing a great sunrise over the beach was. However, this, and another shot of this pair has been wildly popular on FAA and Getty. My advice is to be flexible and pay attention to your surroundings. A pleasant surprise might just be around the corner!
