Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my granddaughter's room. I am a novice and at that time, had just picked up a camera and was very new to digital photography.

Time

Because it was my granddaughter, I knew that timing was everything. It had to be light enough in her room but at the same time, I needed her rested and in a "good" mood. Those who have raised small children understand this better than anyone. It had to be after her nap but before it got too late in the day so she was happy and smiling and cheesing for the camera, otherwise it would have been a complete waste of our day.

Lighting

Back during those times, I did not have a very good camera, nor did I have any lighting equipment. The baby hated the flash so I tried to avoid using it. I wanted the natural light from her big window to be abundant so we tried to work around that timing as well.

Equipment

Camera: DSC-H20 Aperture: f/3.5 ISO: 250 Exposure: 10/400 This was all set at "auto" because I was still too new to manually set my camera. I am just so honored to be a part of this community among all these great photographers, and to have my photograph picked...it amazes me. I had no special lens, no tripod, no flash. A white sheet was thrown up over her crib because we were going to take her out (mommy was going to make faces while I shot photos). I just happened to be at the right place and the right time for this shot.

Inspiration

The same thing that inspires me today, inspired me that day to take that shot....beautiful things, beautiful faces and most especially the face of my grandchild. She inspired me to pick up the camera in the first place and she still inspires me still today.

Editing

Yes. I crop, color correct, smooth, whiten the eyes to make them stand out better. I also use a soft focus to center on the face to showcase that.

In my camera bag

In my camera bag, I always carry two cameras. One is my DSLR Nikon. While it's not a top of the line (quite the contrary), it is good enough for my level of expertise. Also I do not make a living doing this and I cannot afford the higher priced DSLR. I also keep a Nikon point n shoot. I keep extra zoom lens, two filters, two batteries, two hoods, a flash mount, and extra cables.

Feedback

Lighting is important. But more than lighting, I think that having a well rested baby is probably the most important thing to remember. Plan your session around the baby's schedule so that they are well rested and ready. Make the surroundings pleasant and happy for the baby and the shoot will go well. So happy baby is first and foremost, then lighting!
