Behind The Lens

Location

This swallowtail landed on the Mimosa tree in our backyard.

Time

It was mid-morning when I took the shot.

Lighting

The lighting was natural morning light - sunny with blue skies.

Equipment

I used my Nikon 5300 DSLR with Nikon 55-300 lens attached, hand-held. Light was natural.

Inspiration

Butterflies always inspire me, as does all nature! I especially love the swallowtails, with their wonderful colors and shape. They make a beautiful sight against the pink blossoms of our Mimosa tree.

Editing

I used Photoshop to do a basic edit on the shot. Then, using duplicate layers, I applied two different filters to each layer to get the motion effect. I blended the original shot back into the altered image and applied a NIK tonal density filter to give the stained glass light effect. It was great fun!

In my camera bag

I carry my Nikon 5300 DSLR, Nikon 55-300 (usually attached) and Nikon 16-85 mm lenses, Sigma 16-250 macro lens, kit lenses, polarizer and ND filters for each lens, cleaning cloths, extra memory cards, and remote release. Depending on where and what I'm shooting, I take a Bogen tripod with pan and tilt head.

Feedback

Keep your eyes open for the small moments in nature that are easy to miss. "See" different things in an image and learn how to play with it. Learn from others! Envision the possibilities of your images.
