Location
Bamburgh Castle is a castle on the northeast coast of England, by the village of Bamburgh in Northumberland. This window, lit naturally by the daylight coming through the windows, is just off the entrance to the great meeting room.Time
We were on the visitors' tour of the castle. It was a beautiful day (for northeastern England). The photo was taken at 0920 on May 12, 2016.Lighting
One wasn't allowed to use tripods and I wanted the relatively poorly lit chair to be well exposed. I asked the docent if I could lean my camera against one of the upright columns. She said, "Normally we don't permit it, but since you asked so nicely, sure!". This one one time I was happy I asked for permission instead of forgiveness!Equipment
I used a Nikon D750 without flash or tripod (see note above regarding using the column for a steady support). The exposure was 1/45 sec at f/2.8 at focal length 34mm and my ISO was set at 450. The lens was a Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC.Inspiration
The castle was incredible, but I wanted to focus attention on the simple aspects instead of the grandiose aspects. I recalled that one of my favorite photos from years ago was a natural lit cowboy saddle with light coming from the side through a window. I knew when I captured the image that I would convert it to B&W.Editing
The image was captured as a raw Nikon (NEF) file. I 'developed' it in Lightroom and then transferred the 'developed' image into PhotoShopCC. I treated it with Topaz Labs 'Clarity', Nik Dfine & Silver Efex Pro 2 before straightening and cropping. In my camera bag
I normally carry my Nikon D750 full frame with the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC lens. I also carry a Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4G ED VR and a Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR and finally, a Nikon GPS 1A.Feedback
It's easy to simply walk through a special building and snap photos of room after room. It's much more special to focus on something IN that building that is special to it; a chair, desk pen & ink, a bell, etc. I've found that the more FOCUSED you can bring the viewer, the more the viewer likes it.
