Mr. Mike Moats was teaching a macro course in Northern Virginia last fall. He had feathers, clock gears, all sorts of small, interesting things to photograph. Each student could arrange whatever 'struck their fancy'.Time
The photo was taken in during the afternoon 'photography lab' portion of Mike Moats' class.Lighting
The lighting was harsh room light - mostly florescent.Equipment
I used a Nikon D300, shooting in raw, with a tripod and room lighting.Inspiration
I was thinking, when I saw the gears, that I might be able to capture a photo that represented 'industry'; the intricate inter-workings of the small gears, the reflections of harsh lighting to provide high contrast. Later I added the 'Topaz Glow' to simulate an industrial oil sheen.Editing
When I was home and processing the photos, I ensured the background was black and then added Topaz Glow to give the reflections of the gears that 'ethereal' appearance (like oil was covering the gears and the light was reflecting in different directions).In my camera bag
Since this photo, I had my Nikon D300 converted by LIfePixel to an IR camera and purchased a Nikon D750 full frame camera. Additionally, I've added a Tamron SP24 - 70mm f/2.8 for the majority of shots. I still use my SIGMA AF MACRO 90MM that I used for this photo!Feedback
Take lots of photos! Don't be afraid to try 'weird' stuff in your photographs. Crop close (no need to include edges if you have something to capture your viewer's attention).
