Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photograph at Camp Woodward in Woodward, Pennsylvania. It is home to beginners all the way to Olympic and Pro Athletes.

Time

This photo was taken midday during the fall.

Lighting

The lighting was actually very hard for the athlete to work with because the sun was very bring at that time of day. On one of the jumps, he lost sight of the ground during a flip. We ended up cutting this photoshoot short because of this safety issue.

Equipment

I used a Camera: NIKON D90, Aperture: 8/1, ISO: 640, Shutter Speed: 1/2000 and a Focal Length: 580/10. I laid in the middle of the ramps, on my back, on the rails.... anything to get the perfect shot!

Inspiration

I wanted to capture a fraction of a second during a BMX trick that shows how impressive these skills really are. In this photo you can see the moment where BMX Pro Zack Warden lets go of the handle bars, looks down at the ground and remains completely straight in the air with the bike pressed up against his body.

Editing

I brought the trees out a little bit more in post processing. Because the sun was so bright, it faded the colors a little bit.

In my camera bag

Since this photograph was taken, I have graduated from Penn State (and no longer rent their Nikon's). My Canon EOS 6D is now my absolute favorite. The image quality of this camera is amazing, and it is very easy to shoot completely in manual mode. My favorite lens would have to be my Canon 50mm. The depth of field that this lens produces is beautiful. I also carry a Sigma 28-70mm, a Sigma Macro Super 70-300mm and a Tokina 19-35mm. I have a flash attachment as well, but I rarely use it-- as I love working with natural light. I also have a Canon EOS ELAN Film camera and a Canon AE-1 Film Camera with various lenses. Although I do not carry those around, I do enjoy processing film from those cameras in a dark room every once in a while! It really makes you appreciate today's technology.
