I took this photo on the Cog Railway while going up Mount Washington in New Hampshire. I had to lean out the window in the rain to get the shot!Time
It was around 10am when I took the shot. I could see the dense fog within the mountain ridges and knew I had to snap shots before I got too high in the mountains. When we reached the top of Mount Washington, it was all white. You couldn't see 3 feet in front of your face because of the clouds and fog.Lighting
All of the white clouds and fog really popped the lighting during the hazy rain. I love the contrast between the fog and the dark mountains. Had this photo been taken later in the day, I think it would have been too dark, as it was autumn.Equipment
I used my Canon EOS 6D and a 20/1 focal length to capture this photo. Because it was raining, and I had to stick my camera out the train window in order to shoot, I wrapped my camera in a plastic bag to protect from the water. I also think the most important thing I did was use my camera strap and held my head at an awkward angle-- just to make sure I didn't drop the camera as I was snapping photos. The incline angle of the Cog Railway is insane.Inspiration
I love fall, and I love nature. At first, I was sad that it was raining and foggy on the day I was set to go on the Cog. However, I realized I had a small window of opportunity through the fog on the mountain to snap a few beautiful photos. I purposely sat on the side of the train where I knew another track might produce another train.Editing
I brightened the photo a little bit, but the reflection of light off of the fog and clouds made pretty good lighting to begin with!In my camera bag
I absolutely love my Canon EOS 6D. The quality of images it produces is fantastic, and it is easy for me to shoot in manual mode. My Canon 50mm portrait lens is also a favorite. The depth of field I get from the lens makes my photographs look beautiful. I also carry a Sigma 28-77mm, a Sigma 70-300mm Macro Super and a Tokina 19-35mm. I also carry an attachable Canon flash, but I only use it for bounce lighting because I love working with natural light. Although not in my main bag, I also have a Canon EOS ELAN film camera and a Canon AE-1 Film camera with various lenses. I love shooting with them and processing film in a dark room every once in a while. It really makes you appreciate technology today!Feedback
Don't let 'bad' weather deter you from trying to snap a great photo. I was initially sad because it was autumn, and I knew I wouldn't be able to see all the brilliant colors of the fall leaves glistening in the sun from the top of the mountain. Once I accepted I wasn't going to get a colorful autumn shot, I set my sights on a beautiful foggy one instead!
