Location
I took the photograph from the top of Rockefeller Center in New York City. I chose this location because I wanted to get all of the historic landmarks of the city in the photograph. The Empire State building and the rest of the sky scrapers are all lit up for Christmas!Time
Sunset is one of the magical times of the day to capture stunning photos. I chose sunset because the sky is glowing with warm colors, but it's just dark enough for the city to be illuminated by the lights of the buildings.Lighting
Sunrise and Sunset are the golden hours in photography. Magic happens at these hours!Equipment
I used my Canon EOS 6D to capture this photo.Inspiration
Christmastime in New York City is magical. Although it was pretty cold at the tippy top of Rockefeller Center, I wanted to share the magic of New York at Christmas with everyone.Editing
I edited the sky and the buildings separately to bring out their colors. I also placed a sharp mask over the buildings to make sure everything was nice and crisp. In my camera bag
I absolutely love my Canon EOS 6D. The quality of images it produces is fantastic, and it is easy for me to shoot in manual mode. My Canon 50mm portrait lens is also a favorite. The depth of field I get from the lens makes my photographs look beautiful. I also carry a Sigma 28-77mm, a Sigma 70-300mm Macro Super and a Tokina 19-35mm. I also carry an attachable Canon flash, but I only use it for bounce lighting because I love working with natural light. Although not in my main bag, I also have a Canon EOS ELAN film camera and a Canon AE-1 Film camera with various lenses. I love shooting with them and processing film in a dark room every once in a while. It really makes you appreciate technology today!Feedback
Go out and experiment during the Golden Hours of the day (Sunrise and Sunset). You will be surprised at how much your photos glow. Don't be afraid to shoot in manual. I always shoot manual. Always. Play around with the ISO, shutter speed and aperture until the photo comes out just right.
