Location
This photo was taken in May 2016 at the South African Lipizzaner’s Mother’s Day performance.Time
It was taken during their afternoon performance in their indoor arena.Lighting
Their indoor arena is built in such a way that in the afternoon, the sun shines just right, through the openings between the roof and the walls, that it illuminates a spot in the arena. It provides fantastic contrast and natural lighting, when the horses and handlers step in that spot.Equipment
Canon EOS 70D with a Sigma 18-250 f/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM. No flash. ISO 1600, 1/250sec, F6.3Inspiration
I love horses and I love trying to capture their beauty, movement, mood, lines and in this case the connection the handler has with this stallion.Editing
Yes, I took advantage of the contrast created by the natural light, and increased the shadows to only highlight the subject. All editing was done in Photoshop. In my camera bag
90% of the time only my Canon 70D and my Sigma 18-250 zoom lens.Feedback
Work with the light And know what you want to do with the photo eventually, as you take the shots. When I take photos of horses, I always keep in mind how the light is falling on them, what is highlighted. This will determine what I can do in post-processing. I am a fan of post-processing so you see only the horse on a black background, so I need the natural light to do the highlighting on the horse as I take the photo. That way I only have to tweak highlights and colour, add more shadow and remove unwanted scenery.
