Location
This photo was actually taken at and Incredibly small airport that used this Douglas DC-3 as a billboard for their restaurant in Lodi California.Time
I don't remember the exact time but it was somewhere around 9 or 10 p.m. after I was heading home from class.Lighting
Surprisingly this was almost all natural light with just a hint of artificial from the nearby freeway and one speedlight on super low power. The sun had set but with the long exposure i was able to pull that light back onto the reflective surface.Equipment
For this shot i used my Nikon D7100 with a 50mm prime lens resting on a vanguard alta pro tripod. The single speedlight was a yongnuo YN565EX.Inspiration
The first time i saw this plane i knew i wanted to photograph it. Several times i stopped in at the office to get permission with no one ever being there. Finally i decided to just go in and shoot it since it was within eye sight of the office and only 100 or so feet from the entrance. I actually got locked inside the airport while I was taking these photos. The gate was an automatic gate it just so happened while I was out taking the photos the gate closed and locked. Thankfully I had parked on the other side so it was just a matter of getting myself and my camera gear out but even that proved to be a challenge.Editing
Yes, the raw image had so many different lighting colors that i needed to subdue them. I left a small amount just to add some pop and points of interest in the photo. Alongside the color correction there was text painted on the side for the nearby resturant that was removed using a combination of clone stamp and the spot healing brush. In my camera bag
My bag is fairly packed and right now holds my Nikon d7100 and D750, two yongnuo speedlights (yn565 and yn560), a dji mavic pro, gaff tape, flashlights, smoke grenades, small Speaker, extra batteries, tiny first aid kit, remote triggers, sd cards, filters, and alot more tiny irrelevant little things like quarters for tripod feet and filter wrenches.Feedback
Always try to get ahold of the air traffic controller or the person in charge of the airport that way you don't get locked in! Play with light especially with objects that don't move and you have plenty of time with. Experiment and discover new things, do things that you never would think could work just because you can. Lastly when you see something that you want to shoot don't say I'll stop there next time and shoot it because I almost did that same thing with this shot I almost said I'll come back next time and I would have missed out on this beautiful shot.
