Behind The Lens

Location

For our fall break, our family decided to take a day trip to Cheaha State Park in Alabama. The park is set up so well with walking trails and boardwalks that are accessible for everyone! It ended up being a beautiful day outdoors with stunning fall color!

Time

We got up early and drove for about two hours. When we arrived, there was a mist over the mountain that morning but we knew eventually it would burn off. So we took off down the trails to see what we could take pictures of. This ended up being about 11 o'clock. Any earlier and I'm not sure it would have been bright enough to capture without a high ISO.

Lighting

The fog/mist hung heavy for a few hours that morning but we were determined to get some good pictures. Our kids ran along the boardwalk while my husband and I stopped to take pictures along the way. I was worried about the ISO getting too high but I was able to capture this at 400 ISO, f5.6,and 1/250 sec. The grey certainly set the mysterious mood!

Equipment

My go to camera at the time was a Nikon D7000. We were trying to travel "light" for the day so I didn't have my tripod and I don't love to use a flash.

Inspiration

Since I learned a long time ago to learn your camera so you can take pictures in any situation, I was prepared instead of disappointed. I had come to take pictures of beautiful fall colors on the mountain and was met with grey. We were able to take pictures of squirrels in the trees and then I came upon this situation. I immediately thought of the Shel Silverstein poem "Where the Sidewalk Ends". So much mystery in the fog. I don't think I even saw the man in the photo until I processed it. I also love the leading lines taking you right to the "end" of the sidewalk.

Editing

We took this trip in the fall of 2012 and wow how apps have changed since then. I did do some initial editing in Photoshop but I love to edit on my phone and view and post from my phone. I really wanted the focus to be on the man at the end of the walkway so I added a blur to the edges. I think I used Camera plus to add the blur. My current favorite editing app is Snapseed.

In my camera bag

Well, my husband just switched me over to a Canon 5DS. As long as I've been a photographer, I've been a Nikon girl. I think my favorite camera was the D7100, but I have loved having a camera with wifi built in like on my D750. Since my husband owns a camera store, he is constantly getting cameras and lenses on trade and upgrading my camera bag- yes, lucky me! My favorite lens is probably the macro. The one thing I have I don't use more are my ND filters. I LOVE all the photos of long exposure with water.

Feedback

Be ready in any given situation. When you travel, you don't know what you will encounter. You have to look for opportunity. I did the "Project 365" for my 40th birthday/year. Not only did I learn my camera, I trained my eyes to look at the world differently and at the details. After a while, I felt like I had taken pictures of everything there was to take pictures of and so I had to get "creative". So, on the mountain, I got creative and found a story to tell in a picture!
