I took this photo in my backyard in Saint George, Vermont after working all day and finally getting home to let the dogs out to play. This image was taken after they had played catch with the ball until they were both completely exhausted and needed to rest for a moment.Time
It was taken late in the afternoon in early September with the sun beginning to get the golden glow that we see here in Vermont around sunset.Lighting
It was late in the afternoon, and the sun was behind the dogs so I used a bit of fill in flash to keep the lighting even on their faces.Equipment
I shot this with a Pentax K3 camera using a Pentax SMC 50mm f 1.7 lens handheld, using a Pentax AF540 flash for the fill in flash.Inspiration
My two dogs, Oso and Carabella, love to play after work, and I often bring my camera to capture their antics as they romp and play. After a half hour or so of chasing the ball, Oso and Carabella sat down to rest for a moment. Often when they lie down together, they will lay back to back like this, so they can each keep on eye on their side of the yard to make sure I don't get away!Editing
I used Photoshop CS5 to process this image. I did some color balance adjustment and some contrast adjustmentIn my camera bag
I use Pentax gear, and am currently using the K3 camera. I usually carry quite a lot in my bag, just so I have what I need when I need it. I carry a number of lenses with me; an advantage with the Pentax is the ability to use all of the old Pentax glass, and I have quite a collection of both new and old Pentax lenses. I use a tripod for my long exposure and landscape work, but usually shoot handheld for my macro work and when shooting my dogs at play or rest. I use a lot of Cokin filters, mostly ND filters for the long exposures and water work.Feedback
Getting images of my dogs is always a real treat! They are both so very photogenic, and they just love to pose for the camera. It helps that they are very well trained and will sit for as long as I need, if I am posing them. I always try to get "on their level" and not shoot from above. I always keep the ball they love at hand, just in case I want them to "look" in a certain direction; I use the ball to guide their eyes where I want them to look.
