This image was taken in Hyde Park, Vermont in the trailer we were living in while building our house. My dogs, Oso and Carabella were a bit tired and had settled in for a nap. These two dogs are the best of friends and they do everything together; play, eat, drink, and sleep. They always look out for us and each other and they trust each other completely. Seeing such a pure, innocent love is just a treasure, having the opportunity to capture it is such a pleasure!Time
We had been working on the early stages of house construction, mostly all the hard land clearing labor and the dogs had been doing their best to keep up but by the late afternoon, they were ready to get out of the hot Vermont summer sun and go back into the "lovely" air-conditioned trailer that we were living in. These dogs just love the cool air and the bed they were using was right under the vent and this blast of cool air put them out in a matter of moments!Lighting
The lighting in my trailer was not the best, with a window behind and to the left of the dogs. It was darkened by a light curtain to keep the heat out, so I used a flash unit to help out against the back light and to fill the shadows a bit. The flash was off the camera and had a diffuser on it.Equipment
I shot this image with a Pentax K-3 camera and a Pentax flash unit, handheld.Inspiration
I had my camera handy while doing work on the house site so it was just one of those moments when everything just "lined up"; We came into the cool trailer, I settled down for some paperwork at the table across from where they had settled down to recover from the heat of the day. The camera was within reach, the dogs were just settling down to sleep and I was just right there at the right moment and just snapped away. Some days you get lucky and capture some precious moments.Editing
I run most of my images through camera raw and Photoshop. I don't process my images too much, mostly for contrast as I tend to lots of contrast in my images. In my camera bag
I use Pentax equipment. I like the ability and backward compatibility Pentax has that allows all that old beautiful Pentax glass to still have a home! I usually carry a lot into the field, usually too much and never what I need! Filters, tripod, extra batteries, lots of lens choices and all of my macro rings! I have a lovely old Cokin flash unit I use for my macro shots which goes everywhere with me. I can't afford all the bells and whistles of some other brands, and I don't do this for a living so ebay and old lenses are my friend! I learned old school, so I don't miss the things I never had anyway!Feedback
It is usually a thing I have to plan for when I take photos. I work long hours and don't have much time to get out and take photos, much less have the time to process them. The sad truth is, if you don't have your camera with you, you can't take a picture! I got lucky this time. The slightest disturbance would have woken my dogs and spoiled the image. The camera was ready and handy and that got in done in the moment. Keep your camera ready to go and handy in a moment. You will be glad you did!
