This image of my two dogs, Oso and Carabella, was taken in my back yard in Saint George, Vermont.Time
I had come home a little early that day, around 3:30 in the afternoon in late January of 2011. I let the dogs out to play and grabbed the camera and the ball. We all went out to play in the snow fort in the backyard, complete with tunnels and bridges and secret chambers only the dogs could reach...Lighting
Late afternoon sunshine in late January in Vermont...I call it lighting Heaven! As the sun sets low on the horizon, glancing blows of gentle sunlight travel over the Adirondack mountains to the west, creating tones and hues from creamy white to golden yellow and red and purple; The light is just like the weather here...just wait a minute and it will be totally different! In this image I caught the dogs in a moment of rest, i was looking southward through two different tunnels, the dogs were caught in just a bit of the southwesterly setting sunlight, just enough to accent their own golden tones within their fur.Equipment
I shot this image using a Pentax K-5 camera, using a smc PENTAX-DA* 50-135mm F2.8 ED [IF] SDM lens, set at 50mm at F3.2 at 1/125 sec with an ISO of 400.Inspiration
Every day after a hard day of waiting for me to come home from work, Oso and Carabella just love to unwind outside in the backyard. 2011 saw some record snowfall here in Vermont, and with all that snow, I decided to build a huge snow fort for the dogs to play in. It was so big that year...over 6 feet tall, with secret chambers, bridges and tunnels, so that the dogs could run and play until they couldn't play any longer. Great fun for me, to chase them with the camera! It offered the occasional quiet moment as well, as this image illustrates.Editing
I processed the image from RAW using Photoshop's camera raw plug in, and then processed it using Photoshop CS5. I made some over all contrast adjustments, and did some dodging and burning. In my camera bag
I tend to travel heavy, always ready for anything! I usually carry a 15mm, a 40mm, a 50mm prime, as well as the nice 50-135 DA* and the 16-50 DA*, a 100mm macro with lots of extension, a Conkin creative flash and a bunch of p filters as well as a regular flash unit.Feedback
I could chase the dogs all day, they are so fun and dynamic to photograph. The action shots are simply lots of fun; I can experiment with stop action, or lots of induced motion and panning...but if I wait long enough, I can catch them with that...that look they get! I love catching that moment, and the only way to do it is to just be patient, and yet always ready to shoot! Always looking, always knowing, always seeing what the lens is going to see, even when you aren't looking through the lens. Always ready...
