Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken by the beach huts in Paignton. I noticed that the couple and the dog were asleep in the sun. The setting seemed to me like a perfect British summer by the sea

Time

It was taken at 13:00 in June. I had just taken an amazing steam train from Kingswear and was looking for anything that caught my attention

Lighting

The sun was over-head and to my left casting a small shadow of my subjects to add some contrast and depth. I unusually took the photo at iso1600 so that I could pull out some of the details in the beach hut - the filter also takes a little light away from the filter, and I wanted to avoid any sudden movement from the dog so my shutter speed was 1/1000s. To pick out enough detail I used f9

Equipment

I was using my Leica Q2 Monochrom Reporter with its fixed 28mm Summilux f1.7 lens with an orange filter to add a little more contrast

Inspiration

I loved the composition of the people and the dog sleeping in front of their beach hut, with the sand underfoot and the fun-fair in the background

Editing

Lightroom was used to pick out some details in the beach hut, and to crop the image a little

In my camera bag

I travel very light, I only usually take one camera, with 3 filters - red, orange and UV, a spare battery and a second memory card

Feedback

My advise would be to be ready to take a photo - there are often really interesting things to capture, but most can easily be missed by not being ready to capture the moment
