Behind The Lens

Location

Iceland.... I have wanted to go there since I first heard the name. This is one of the many waterfalls that drop off the plateau.

Time

This was early on a dull cold morning. Driving along with the heater on full and stumbled across a series of falls. At first I thought it was going to be a fairly uninteresting for any photography but the moody sky actually helped.

Lighting

Normally an overcast day can be plain dull, flat light. But not for waterfalls. I can lift them beyond what they would look like on a sunny day. I helps too for long exposures because the light is so even.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5dmk4 with a 17-40 lens and a ND 400 - 20sec exposure.....on a big old heavy manfrotto tripod- a beast- the 055 with a big ball head. It will handle any weather, solid as a rock and worth carrying.

Inspiration

The clarity of the water, the even light, the moody sky... add a waterfall and you could shoot for ages. I liked the composition of the pool and the mountain backdrop.

Editing

Most of my processing is in Lightroom... this shot did not need much as it came out pretty even from the camera. A boost to the contrast of about 15%, vibrance 10%, and a bit of extra contrast in the sky using a circular gradient.

In my camera bag

I'm a Canon user and have been for a long time. It's difficult to change once you start on a brand. Traveling, I use an old Crumpler photo bag, probably 12 years old now and definitely the most comfortable and useful bag I have used. I carry 2 bodies, a mk3 and a mk4- one with the 70-200 and the other the wide- It works well so you don't have to change lenses out in the environment. I keep a couple of filters in the bag - a nd400 for the long exposures and a polarising filter. Usually take a 600 flash just in case. A good cloth for lens wiping, spare batteries and cards and a bottle of water ( one of the most important things) you never really know how long you'll be out there if the shooting is good. Oh Almost forgot, often I carry a small stool- very lightweight, a lifesaver when you are shooting long exposures.

Feedback

My advice to anyone wanting to get a shot like this is to be prepared for any shot when you are traveling. You can plan your bag out so that you can shoot a bird, a landscape, a waterfall, a tree or a portrait, anytime... by having a wide lens, a long lens, a couple of filters and a tripod ( a light one will do for almost every shot) keep a couple of spare batteries on hand- I keep them in my pocket if its very cold. Then be prepared to wait for the shot. It is very Zen to wait for a shot particularly when you are shooting long exposures. You start to notice things around you that are not obvious at first, the texture of the rocks, the swirls of water, the speed of clouds, then sometimes the light happens and you're right there.
